What it is
Persephone ate six pomegranate seeds in the underworld, and the Greeks used that to explain winter itself. The Spanish city of Granada carries its name, and its jewelled seeds have decorated feasts from Persia to Andalusia.
In the kitchen
Halve it and slap the back with a wooden spoon over a bowl — the seeds rain out. They wake up anything rich or creamy.
