What it is
The same genus as the kiwi, but the vine survives winters near −30 °C, which is why it fruits in Burgundy, Poland and Ontario where kiwi will not set. The skin is smooth and thin enough to eat, so it goes in whole like a grape — and there is nowhere to hide a bruise.
In the kitchen
Buy them firm and finish them in a paper bag with an apple for two or three days; picked already soft, they are on their way out. They hold a fortnight in the fridge and no longer — freeze the surplus whole.
