What it is

English country lore holds that blackberries must not be picked after Michaelmas, the twenty-ninth of September, because the devil spits on them. The superstition is sound agronomy: autumn damp brings a mould that does turn the late fruit sour.

In the kitchen

Never wash them until the moment you use them. They absorb water instantly and collapse.
