What it is

Its Latin name, Rubus idaeus, points to Mount Ida, where Greek myth says the nymph Ida pricked her finger picking berries for the infant Zeus — staining white fruit red forever. Botany keeps the poetry on file.

In the kitchen

Too fragile to wash, too fleeting to keep: eat them the day you buy them, or crush them into a five-minute sauce with a spoon of sugar.
