What it is

The Aztecs grew the “tomatl” long before Europe dared to eat it — for two centuries, Europeans grew tomatoes as ornamental plants, convinced they were poisonous. It took the cooks of Naples to turn suspicion into sauce.

In the kitchen

Never store tomatoes in the fridge: cold kills their perfume. A pinch of salt ten minutes before serving wakes them up.
