What it is
Figs were being dried in the Jordan valley eleven thousand years ago, and some archaeologists argue the fig was the first plant humans ever cultivated — earlier than wheat, because a cutting will root on its own.
In the kitchen
The white bloom on the surface is crystallised sugar, not mould. It is a sign of quality rather than a fault.
