What it is
Its name comes from basileus — Greek for king — and in India its cousin tulsi is holy enough to be planted in temple courtyards. A royal and sacred plant that ended up, gloriously, on tomatoes.
In the kitchen
Heat murders it: tear the leaves by hand and add them off the flame, at the very last moment.
