What it is
The modern strawberry was born around 1750 in Brittany, when a plant smuggled from Chile by the spy-engineer Frézier crossed with a Virginian one in French soil. His name, fittingly, sounds like fraisier — strawberry plant.
In the kitchen
Never wash them until the last minute, and try a drop of balsamic or a turn of black pepper — it deepens their perfume.
