What it is
James I tried to found an English silk industry in 1608 by planting thousands of mulberries, and reportedly bought the wrong species — black rather than white, which silkworms will not eat. The trees survived; the industry never began.
In the kitchen
They will not travel and barely keep a day, which is why you never see them in shops. Spread a sheet and shake the branch.
