What it is

Its Latin name, inodorus, is a fair criticism — unlike the cantaloupe it gives almost no scent even when perfectly ripe, which is why so many people buy it at the wrong moment. It keeps far longer in exchange.

In the kitchen

Judge it by the skin, which turns waxy and faintly sticky when ripe, and by a slight give at the blossom end.
