What it is

Spanish missionaries named the flower for the Passion of Christ, reading the corona as the crown of thorns and the three stigmas as the nails. The fruit took the name by association — it has nothing to do with passion in the ordinary sense.

In the kitchen

Wrinkled is ripe. A smooth, taut passion fruit is under-ripe and will be sharply acidic.
