What it is

The Royal Navy switched from lemons to West Indian limes in the 1860s to save money, not knowing limes carry far less vitamin C. Scurvy quietly returned to British ships — but the nickname limey stuck to the sailors regardless.

In the kitchen

Roll it hard on the counter before juicing and take the zest first. Once cut, the zest is impossible to get cleanly.
