What it is

Dr Johnson’s dictionary sneered that oats were “food for horses in England and for men in Scotland” — to which a Scot replied: “That is why England has such fine horses, and Scotland such fine men.” Porridge won the argument.

In the kitchen

A pinch of salt is the difference between wallpaper paste and breakfast. Toast the flakes in butter first and the whole bowl changes class.
