What it is

Almost every banana exported on Earth is the Cavendish, a single clone with no genetic variation at all. Its predecessor, the Gros Michel, was wiped out by a fungus in the 1950s — and the same disease is now working through the Cavendish.

In the kitchen

Keep them off the fruit bowl. They give off enough ethylene to ripen everything within reach days early.
